Conference entitled “Migrazioni e diritti procedural-processuali nel sistema CEDU”. The meeting, held at the Aula Magna of the Judicial Citadel of Salerno, was attended by lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, who spoke to present the Observatory on ECHR jurisprudence launched by Union and funded by the Fondazione Terzo Pilastro Internazionale. The Department of Law of the University of Bari Aldo Moro hosted a meeting on ” La tutela dei minori e delle donne nel contesto migratorio”. Under the patronage of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, the Civil Chamber and the Criminal Chamber of Perugia organized the conference entitled “Green Pass nei luoghi di lavoro: diritti e doveri, procedure e conseguenze sanzionatorie “. The meeting, streamed on the GoToMeeting platform, was attended by the lawyer Antonietta Confalonieri, Coordinator of the Sardegna section of UFDU, and Silvia Ricci, Coordinator of the Umbria section.

The Department of Political and Legal Sciences of the University of Messina hosted a meeting on “Cambiamenti climatici e migranti ambientali”. On the occasion of the International Day of Girls, the Association of Women Lawyers Italy (ADGI), with the patronage of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, organized a meeting entitled “Empowerment femminile. Il ruolo della Comunità Internazionale”. The meeting, held in blended mode and streamed on the Jitsi platform, was attended, among others, by: lawyer Loredana Zaccari, President of the Perugia section of ADGI, lawyer Maria Concetta Falivene, Regional Authority for Childhood and Adolescence of Abbruzzo, Ambassador Fabrizio Lobasso, Deputy Director Africa MAECI, former Italian Ambassador in Khartoum, and lawyer Paola Regina, Coordinator of the Lombardia section of UFDU.

The Milan Bar Association and the Milan Law School organized a webinar entitled “Entrata in vigore del protocollo 15 CEDU e sorti del protocollo 16. Novità e sfide per gli avvocati””, which was held in streaming on the FormaSFERA platform. Speakers at the seminar included lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, lawyer Paola Regina, Referent of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani of the Lombardy section, Dr. Roberto Giovanni Conti, Counsel of the Court of Cassation, and Dr. Roberto Chenal, jurist at the European Court of Human Rights.

The Italian Association of Victims of Crime (AIVR), in collaboration with Ius Ac Bonum Associazione Forense, organized the meeting entitled “Strategia Europea sui diritti delle vittime di Reato 2020-2025, l’attuazione della direttiva 2012/29/UE nei diversi Paesi UE”, which was held on the platform Zoom Professional. Speakers at the meeting included, among others, lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, Dr. Roberto Reali, President of the Court of Rome, Prof. Vincenzo Mastronardi, Psychiatrist, clinical criminologist and psychotherapist, lawyer Alessandro Bucca, President of the Italian Association of Vulnerable Victims. The meeting was moderated by lawyer Arianna Agnese, President of the Italian Association of Victims of Crime.

The Equal Opportunities Commission of the Municipality of Castiglione del Lago organized the ceremony for the naming of a street after Tina Lagostena Bassi. The conference entitled “Nel segno di Tina Lagostena Bassi, mai più violenza sulla violenza” was held in the setting of Palazzo della Corgna and was introduced by the string ensemble of the Trasimeno school of music. The Mayor of the Municipality of Castiglione del Lago, Matteo Burico, the President of the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Municipality of Castiglione del Lago, Rosella Paradisi, the Honorable Laura Boldrini, the magistrate and politician Anna Finocchiaro, the State Councillor Raffaele Sestini and the lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani Took attended the event. The meeting was moderated by journalist Elena Teatini.

JULY 16, 2021

Signing of the memorandum of understanding between the National Bar Association and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), aimed at promoting the culture of legality and respect for the rights of migrants, including through the development of responsible behavior of the operators of the jurisdiction involved, as well as promoting the joint implementation of information and training initiatives. One of the objectives of the agreement is to raise awareness on the subject via specific training, facilitated by the recent approval of the decree on specialisation which identified human rights as a specific training profile. This is a commitment in the field of human rights that will allow lawyers to have the tools and weapons to give contemporary answers to a contemporary phenomenon.  It is also an opportunity to give a more complete response and allow lawyers to be allies in the challenge that immigration poses to us. The program will be implemented through the establishment of a coordinating committee consisting of four members, two appointed by the CNF (Franceso Caia and Anton Giulio Lana) and two by the IOM (the Director of the Mediterranean Coordination Office, Laurence Hart, and the Project Development Officer).

The law firm Di Tosto and the law firm Buonuomo & Partners organized an online conference entitled “Nuove frontier nel diritto di famiglia” which was held in streaming on the Zoom platform. The Basilicata section of the Union, in collaboration with AIGA, ADGI, the Bar Association of Matera, Metis Magazine and under the patronage of the Basilicata Region, organized the meeting entitled ” La Crescita sostenibile nelle costituzioni e nel diritto internazionale”, which was held on the Zoom platform. Online conference “Avvocatura in pericolo nel mondo” organized by the Genoa Bar Association – Human Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Genoa Bar Association. The meeting was held remotely. During the conference, among others, Emilio Robotti, member of the Liguria Section of the UFDU, gave a speech entitled “L’avvocato nello stato di diritto nella giurisprudenza della CEDU”.

Online conference “Data Protection: ieri – oggi – domani”. The meeting was organized by UNIDPO on DATA PROTECTION DAY, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the signing of Convention 108 on the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data. The meeting started with the institutional greetings of the Presidents of the Associations involved: lawyer Carla Secchieri, Councillor of the National Legal Council and Honorary President of the Italian National Data Protection Officer Union (UNIDPO); lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of UFDU and Lawyer Ugo Carlo Di Nicolò (UNIDPO), and it was coordinated by lawyer Antonietta Confalonieri, Director of UNIDPO and coordinator of the Sardegna Section UFDU.

The discussion had as its object the deepening of the theme of “Reflections of the European Convention on Human Rights on the legislation and jurisprudence of the Italian national courts”. Conference: “I primi 70 anni della Convenzione europea dei diritti umani. Il futuro di un modello di successo e la sfida sempre attuale della protezione dei diritti delle donne”. The meeting was part of the Project “WPS LAB – Women, Peace and Security: Legal Aspects and Beyond” and has been co-organized by Sapienza University of Rome and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The conference, set on the occasion of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, was attended by speakers like lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, Sergio Marchisio, Professor of International Law at La Sapienza, Marta Cartabia, President Emeritus of the Constitutional Court, Claudio Zanghì, Professor Emeritus of International Law at the University of Rome La Sapienza.

OCTOBER 29, 2020

The Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani has given its patronage to the ceremony in memory of Ebru Timtik, an event organized by the Friulian Bar Association and held before the Court of Udine. The purpose of the event was to remember the story of Ebru Timtik, a Turkish lawyer, arrested together with her sister Barkin Timtik, after they had both suffered many persecutions due to their legal advice given to political dissidents accused of terrorism. Timtik died following a hunger strike undertaken with the aim of obtaining a fair trial. Both sisters are recipients of the 2020 Ludovic Trarieux Prize.

Conference: “Intelligenza artificiale e diritti umani” for the 30th anniversary of the quarterly scientific journal “I diritti dell’uomo. Cronache e battaglie”. The conference was attended by professors and experts who spoke about the use of artificial intelligence and new technologies. The ceremony, held at the Sala Zuccari of the Senate, was opened by Giovanni Salvi, Attorney General of the Supreme Court, and Prof. Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani. The event was moderated by Giorgio Zanchini, radio journalist and deputy editor of the journal, while the speakers were Maria Chiara Carrozza, Professor of Industrial Bioengineering at the Scuola Superiore di Sant’Anna, Lorenzo D’Avack, Professor and President of the National Committee for Bioethics, Filippo Donati, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Florence, Ugo Ruffolo, Professor of Private Law at the University of Bologna, and Lucia Tria, President of Section of the Supreme Court of Cassation. The event, which was streamed in order to ensure participation in compliance with COVID-19, also received the patronage of Rai per il Sociale, as well as the recognition of the Medaglia di Rappresentanza of the President of the Italian Republic.

OCTOBER 5, 2020

Strasbourg, Joint Proposal for Third Party Intervention before the European Court of Human Rights (UFDU-FIDH). The Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani (UFDU) and the Fédération Internationale pour les Droits Humains (FIDH) have submitted a joint request for third-party intervention, pursuant to Article 36 ECHR, to the European Court of Human Rights. The request to submit observations as amicus curiae, concerned 10 complaints brought by some migrants from Italian reception centers, about the lack of respect of adequate standards in hotspots, according to European and international law. UFDU and FIDH intended to prove that the aforementioned practices violated the ECHR and in particular Articles 3, 5 and 13 and Article 4 of Protocol 4 of the Convention.

SEPTEMBER 24, 2020

On September 24, 2020, the jury for the award of the 2020 Ludovic Trarieux International Prize met in Geneva. The jury is composed of 28 European lawyers, representing lawyers from all over Europe. Lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, President of the Unione forense per la tutela dei diritti umani, and Lawyer Alessio Sangiorgi, member of the Executive Board of the UFDU, were appointed as members of the jury representing the association. This year, the Prize was jointly awarded to Ebru and Barkin Timtik, two Turkish sisters and lawyers who were arrested in 2017 after much persecution due to their legal advice given to political dissidents accused of terrorism. After years of trials and pre-trial detention, Ebru Timtik went on a hunger strike demanding a fair trial, which resulted in her death after 238 days of protest. Her sister, Barkin Timtik is currently in prison, while her case is still pending before the Court of Cassation.

JULY 7, 2020

Strasbourg, Communication to the Italian State from the European Court of Human Rights. Following the discriminatory advertisement published by the local newspaper Porta Portese in 2006 and 2007, where owners and employers expressly excluded immigrants and foreigners from their offers, UFDU took the case to the European Court of Human Rights in 2012. In its appeal, UFDU claimed that the Italian State is in violation of the ECHR for the failure of the judicial authorities to condemn the discriminatory nature of the ads. The case is pending before the Court. On July 7, 2020, the Italian Government was invited to submit written observations on the matter.

Conference “Stato di emergenza e diritti contagiati”, organized by CNF. The National Bar Association organized the conference with the aim of analyzing the major issues created by the ongoing health emergency in the field of rights, with particular reference to the need for balance and proportionality of the measures put in place to mitigate the health consequences of the pandemic. Some of the most authoritative experts in their respective fields joined to discuss this issue: Guido Alpa, professor emeritus of civil law at the University of Rome La Sapienza, honorary president of the National Bar Association, Gian Domenico Caiazza, president of the Union of Italian Criminal Chambers, Filippo Donati, professor of constitutional law at the University of Florence, component of the Superior Council of the Magistracy, Daniela Piana, Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna Alma Mater Studiorum, member of the Study Office of the Council of State, Fausto Pocar, Professor Emeritus of International Law at the University of Milan, President of the Italian Society of International Law and the European Union, and our President, lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana. The meeting was streamed live on the CNF website and YouTube channel.

JANUARY 23, 2020

Ceremony dedicated to the “Anno dell’avvocato in pericolo nel mondo” Committee of the recognized legal specialist associations. Lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana was invited as President of the UFDU, which was recognized as one of the most representative specialized associations according to the register of the CNF in 2013. Furthermore, UFDU includes the offering of specialized training in the field of international protection of human rights among its founding purposes.

Among the speakers, there was also the President of the UFDU, lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, who spoke about  “L’avvocato come garante dei diritti umani”.

Bolzano, VII Congresso Giuridico Distrettuale “Le sfide dell’avvocatura tra riforme e intelligenza artificiale“. The most recent reforms on trials, professions and work were discussed in depth. The event received the patronage of the National Bar Association, the Unione Triveneta and the University of Bolzano. Lawyer and professor Anton Giulio Lana, as President of UFDU and expert in immigration law, offered his contribution by coordinating the section dedicated to immigration and presenting a report entitled “La giurisprudenza della Corte Europea in materia di immigrazione e i discorsi di odio”.

Moreover, the School of Advanced Specialisation for International Lawyers        organized by UFDU was officially presented.

Milan, Roundtable “Cinquant’anni di spazio giudiziario Europeo”. The event, organized by the UFDU and sponsored by the Bar Association of Milan. The event aimed to examine the role of the internationalist lawyer in the legal world. Moreover, the School of Advanced Specialisation for International Lawyers organized by UFDU was officially presented.

Rome, UFDU organized the round table entitled “La procedura di ricorso individuale alla Corte europea dei diritti dell’uomo: le novità e le prospettive di riforma”. The event provided an opportunity to explore the procedural innovations introduced by Protocols 15 and 16 to the European Convention on Human Rights, including the reduction of the time limit within which to file an appeal and the opportunity to use negotiated procedures in order to reach a compromise between the parties as an alternative to court proceedings.
